About

Welcome! My name is Meilee (pronounced may-lee), and I’m the owner of The Good Word Consulting Services.

My love affair with the written word sparked in childhood. In elementary school, I conjured up short stories about shrink machines and tutored classmates in grammar. As a teen, I dashed off humorous(-to-me) poems about lemmings; my college years saw me reviewing student essays in the writing center. I taught literature and composition in grad school while researching a doctoral dissertation no one will ever read on Romantic and Victorian literature.

“Is earning a degree in English—three of them, even!—worth it?” you might ask (or not, if you stopped reading four sentences ago). Well, my résumé is peppered with roles such as college professor, private tutor, K–12 teacher, workshop facilitator, editor, proofreader, copywriter, content director, and ghostwriter. So I’ve been able to devote my entire career (careers?) to blending education with wordcraft and storytelling. And for that, I count myself fortunate.

From teaching the secrets of an effective academic essay to editing books and journal articles, my passion is for helping students and professionals make their ideas clearer, more compelling, and more concise—but not without a dash of flair. And as a writer, I truly come alive translating complex ideas into accessible, meaningful stories. On the page and in the classroom, I believe in delivering content with accuracy, style, and even humor to keep audiences engaged. I feel immensely rewarded when my interviewees tell me that a magazine feature or a blog post I’ve written has authentically captured their voices and experiences. And when students or readers tell me that they have learned, they were entertained, or they just want more, I am content with my content.

For fun, I lead discussion groups on Victorian fat novels and cater to my seriously spoiled dogs. I don’t know how many bibliophiles also obsess over gel pens and other stationery, but you’ll certainly find me at the center of that Venn diagram. I am the type of person who reads 90% of the placards in museums. I’ve watched (and forgotten the details of) far too many British crime and costume dramas. My favorite punctuation marks are the em dash () and interrobang (?!).
